Every year around the birthday of Dr. Seuss, schools and libraries across the country bring together kids and teens to celebrate books and reading for Read Across America Day. This is the Big House Book Club's second year participating, and this year was even funner than last! :)

We went to 3 schools (Meadow School and Corona Creek), visited dozens of classrooms, read lots of books, and met hundreds of amazing kids -- all in 1 whirlwind day! It was tons of fun for everyone! :)

Thanks to Petaluma Transit, who let us ride the bus for free. Thanks to all the teachers who shared their classrooms with Casa's book clubbers. And thanks to all the school principals who allowed us to do this: Dr. Mahoney, Mr. Schwinn, Ms. Becker, and Ms. Scheele. :)

dear teens and others,

despite mr. wade's and my last-minute efforts to collaborate on something cool, teen tech week sort of snuck up on us this year. we were both  super-busy with other school stuff and, to be honest, i get sort of tired of publicizing programs that only a few people pay attention to. i mean, in this case, plenty of students are in the library using technology regardless. i didn't need to make a big deal about it, and this year i didn't have the heart (or the budget) for it.

so, what did we do? well,  we did what we would have done anyway, only without the fanfare. no banners or fliers; nothing formal or fancy; just some simple electronic games and all-around good clean fun! :)

maybe next year we'll go all out with a tournament and prizes and a whole lot of hoopla. maybe not. the point of teen tech week isn't to get teens to use more tech. teens today practically eat tech for breakfast! the point of teen tech week  is to get teens to use libraries' non-print resources. and casa's teens do that everyday! :)

so, on that note, we say so long to teen tech week 2010 with a techy geeky song (or 10) from mr. wade via boingboing: popten's top ten geek anthems.

happy teen tech week to one and all! :)

we may not be able to have a wii in the library at lunch, like they do at the unquiet library in georgia...

and we may not be able to host a teen gaming tournament like they are at sfpl in san francisco...

but we will for sure do something fun! because this year we're working with mr. wade, mr. mander, mr. creighton, and the tech club! :)

Petaluma has been selected as one of only five city stops across the country and is the only Northern California book signing for the New York Times-bestselling author and star of MTV's The Hills Lauren Conrad!

Conrad is promoting her new second book in the fun and fierce teen fiction L.A. Candy series. Due to time constraints, she only will be able to sign her two books Sweet Little Lies or L.A. Candy (no memorabilia, magazines, or body parts please).

Books may be purchased before the event. The autograph line starts forming at 5 pm.

Bring your cameras and come welcome her to P-Town!

The Big House Library is proud to support student groups on campus when asked to publicize their meetings and promote their events. This guest post is one such honor.

The Girl Talk group, advised by our very own  Rebels English teacher Ms. Athena Kautsch. Any questions or concerns about the students' use of "the B word" should be directed to her. :)

And now, here's Girl Talk! :)

i learned about library day in the life (#libday4) on twitter from buffy hamilton.

very few k-12 school librarians had signed up to particpate; so i added my name to the wiki and took pictures of my monday from start to finish. the result is one big back-lit blur.

but that's pretty much everyday at our library! =D

there's always a slew of classes all day long, broken up by a very busy tutorial and lunch, followed by meetings after school, and more work at home after that.

teacher-librarians are busy freaking people! and while simply documenting the pace and the volume of what we each day do won't change that, it will show the world what we do and hopefully that it matters.
