i learned about library day in the life (#libday4) on twitter from buffy hamilton.

very few k-12 school librarians had signed up to particpate; so i added my name to the wiki and took pictures of my monday from start to finish. the result is one big back-lit blur.

but that's pretty much everyday at our library! =D

there's always a slew of classes all day long, broken up by a very busy tutorial and lunch, followed by meetings after school, and more work at home after that.

teacher-librarians are busy freaking people! and while simply documenting the pace and the volume of what we each day do won't change that, it will show the world what we do and hopefully that it matters.

The library tutorial pass program has been in place for about a month now, and here's what some students are saying about it:

"It's so professional n0w."
"It's like a college library."
"It's way better, quieter. Thanks!"

Yes, of course, students can still come to the library at tutorial! But you need to be checking out books, using computers for class projects, or doing homework. And you need to be quiet.  =)

We've made new passes that have just the teacher's name, the shushing librarian, and nothing else.

So, you no longer need to fill out a bunch of info like on the old passes. Now, when you check in at the circ desk, you just tell us your grade, the class you're doing stuff for, and what you're doing (checking out books, using computers, doing homework at tables, etc).

Here's whatcha gotta do:

1. Ask a teacher, any teacher, for a library pass.
2. Bring the pass to the library at tutorial.
3. Work quietly.

That's it! =)

We'll even put your teacher's pass back in their mailbox so you can ask for it again the next day! =)

We think it's a pretty snazzy system, and we hope that you do, too. =)

Dear Students,

Starting today, and from now on, you will need a pass from a teacher to visit the library during tutorial time.

Yes, this is totally for real.

The passes were designed by art director extraordinaire Mike Reed, and pass or not, they look freaking awesome! =)

Why are we doing this? Well, it's simple. Because you asked us to.

Last year, the Big House Library was popular beyond belief! But the noise level was often too loud to concentrate. Tutorial time is essentially a study hall, and the library is the largest classroom on campus. So if you want to be in the library at tutorial this year, you're going to have to shh! =)

There'll be a cop with a clipboard at the door checking passes. Forgeries will be confiscated and perpetrators will be prosecuted. So please ask a teacher to write you a real pass.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Koval. But please note that these passes were approved by the Principal's Advisory Committee at Casa, so they're not going any where any time soon.

Thank you for your cooperation and compliance with the library tutorial pass program. With your help, it will rock! =)

Hey Everyone,

Hope you had a happy summer. =) It's been great seeing you all back at the Big House. There's lots of surprises in store for you this year: a fabulous new computer lab, tutorial passes, and no food or drink in the library (for real) to begin with (we'll tell you all about all that real soon). And though some stuff may seem lame, actually Miss Helen and I are looking forward to giving you all the awesome library experiences you deserve. (We promise it won't suck. We swear!)

Smiles,
Ms. Koval =)
